Default Bitten by bug in Suse 11.2 X11 & Intel 845 Graphics - Solved

Install failed with a corrupt / incomplete xorg.conf

Seems to be an issue in milestone 5 code with Intel 845 Graphics (intel 82845 video), which startx barfs on, and sax2 can't rewrite. The system boots ok, and I had console (text) based login, but I couldn't get KDE to start, or get to full RunLevel 5.

So after a bit of messing around handcrafting an xorg.conf (and trying not to fry my monitor with bad hsync/vsync settings) I booted into puppy linux V4.3 and copied the live version of xorg.conf back over into the Suse directory.

    KDE fired straight up.

Might save someone else some grief ..

    Cheers,

    Paul.

in the future, please put all pre-release software posts in this
    forum: http://forums.opensuse.org/pre-release-beta/

that way, all relevant data is more easily found by all beta testers..

    Just for "kicks"

rename xorg.conf to xorg.conf.notinuse ( or whatever you prefer)

    Restart x / reboot

    Does it still work?

Here I'm running with nvidia driver and compiz active with no xorg.conf
    at all

    ls /etc/X11/
    fs rstart xim Xmodmap.remote xorg.conf.not_using
    lbxproxy x11perfcomp xim.d xorg.conf.backup Xresources
    proxymngr xdm xinit xorg.conf.install xsm
    qtrc XF86Config.old Xmodmap xorg.conf.md5

Works like a charm - xorg.conf is NOT needed anymore ( for most cases at
    least)

Thanks, i'm pretty new around here (but not to Linux)

It's a known bug with the I845 chipset, as I found it on google, but since the box isn't internet connected, it was a pain to try to get the updated xorg-x11-server packages & dependencies down to fix the issue.

Thinking a little out of the box saved a bit of grief ..

    Cheers,

    Paul.

Interesting. I'll look at it further. I was surprised that such a common embedded graphics chipset got broken in the early 11.2 betas. It's bound to bite quite a few people.

-welcome- we need more experience (with various flavors) around
here...mostly we are overrun with folks jumping off the Redmond ship..

there are, i'm sure you know several things done "the SUSE way"...hope
you don't get tripped up too often..

hmmmm....which reminds me (i thought about it before, but promptly
forgot it as 'too hard') wouldn't it be nice if there was a list of
the differences between 'our' way and 'their' way?? (at least for the
    larger uptake distros)..

Well, I'm originally a SunOS/Solaris man. But i've dabbled with HP-UX and AIX over the years. I like to keep my hand in with Suse and CentOS, as we run RHEL5 at work.

Yes, there's a few differences, but mostly the same 'under the hood'. I'm trying to stay away from Debian / Ubuntu type OS's though, I get confused enough as it is, without learning about .deb and apt-get

    Cheers,

    Paul.

    An interesting thread ....

I was "bit" by the 82845 bug on the weekend, and in the end failed to get the openSUSE-11.1 and 11.2 live CDs to boot to X (on a Fujitsu-Siemens Amilo L6820 laptop with the 82845). I did not try the install of either openSUSE, as I did not want to take chances, given this is a friend's only PC (ie mission critical). I note Fedora-12 boots ok, but it does not have an xorg.conf.

I wish I had read this recommendation on the weekend.

If I get access to this laptop again (and I may not) I will also try this fix and see if it works for that laptop. There is an existing bug report here on this problem (written against openSUSE-11.1 but it also exists in 11.2): https://bugzilla.novell.com/show_bug.cgi?id=556413

I don't have access to the PC with the Intel 845 graphics right now, but when I booted one of my nVidia PCs (GeForce 8400GS) to Puppy, I note it booted to a Vesa driver.

I was curious, what driver do you use in your xorg now on openSUSE-11.2 (that you note was built by puppy). Intel or Vesa ?
