Hi,
Are you using KDE or Gnome? I'm guessing Gnome since you came from Ubuntu, in which case I'm unfamiliar with it but will try to help.
First, could you please post your xorg.conf located at /etc/X11 so we can make sure you actually have everything enabled?
Also, are you using the CompizConfig Settings Manager (CCSM) to change settings? And finally is compiz really turned on? Try using the fusion-icon to make sure that compiz is set as the window manager. Or alternatively open a terminal and type
