Thread: My experiences with Linux

    Default My experiences with Linux

So, I don't know how many of these you guys get... but I figured I'd put my 2 cents in, even if nobody cares

I've been around people who've used *nix for a long time (I remember someone running Debian, the original and I only remember that because I thought the name was funny at the time), but it's always been one of those things I'd never do because my brother was the computer saavy one, not me. Well, years later (like 2 weeks ago! ) I finally installed openSUSE 11.1 because of the user-friendliness it seemed to have.

So I completely agree that it's a superior OS in every way (I know it's really not in debate, but I was skeptical). I've encountered quite a few problems, but honestly most of them were me being an idiot... and the best part is I just hop online and someone has already helped me out by answering the question for someone before, or by step by stepping me through it. I still haven't gotten WINE or POL down really, but I've finally learned enough to do everything else I do except games.

Just a general thanks to the suse community specifically, but the whole *nix community in general for the support and keep up the good work

i know it takes some time, but you will find over time you use WINE
less and less (i have no idea what POL is, other Petroleum, Oil &
Lubricants)...because running native Linux software is always more
    enjoyable..

in fact, i'd suggest you always look first at replacements for those
old, last century application....here are some places to look:

    http://www.osalt.com/
    http://www.linuxrsp.ru/win-lin-soft/table-eng.html
    http://sourceforge.net/
    http://www.google.com/linux

on the other hand, if you are a gamer: running games is WINE is like
putting mustard on your chocolate cake! that is, about the only think
they do pretty good is: M$ makes a pretty good GAME machine...use it
    for that..

and then use the Industrial Strength Real Work machine's Operating
System for all your non-recess/GAME stuff..

Unfortunately, I am a gamer (I mean... who isn't? ), so I'll probably be dual booting with Vista or 7... but for everything else I'll sure as hell NOT booting windows.

if your machine is fast enough you could try using a virtual machine with
    windows installed for running games.

i would recommend the VirtualBox OSE (has its own repro) or maybe KVM
(unfurtunately not really easy to configure).

Can you walk into a gameshop and make any game work under Linux?

    of course not.
what he _can_ do is run only Linux games..

compromise and run windows, or not, the choice is his, and yours..
