Well renaming the .kde4 folder did the trick but all settings are gone.
What really kills me is the fact that I don't know what really happened

Those settings reside in ~/.kde4 directrory which you moved (renamed). Most users just start over with new desktop config, but you could open Dolphin in split view and selectively move files from your backup (renamed folder) to ~/.kde4/share/config (one at a time), but you will have to restart desktop each time for these setting to take effect. One or more of these old config files was causing problems for you, so if you reinstate those, your problems will return. If you're not sure what you're doing, this could get messy, hence the first approach is more practical.
BTW, I recommend backing up your working ~/.kde4 directory once you have the desktop configured the way you like.
