KDE 4.3.1 problems

Well everyday I get closer to my objective: a completely useful open source system.

Now I’m facing some problems, some of them aren’t really important but they are, at least, anoying. The first problem is System notifications. I managed to setup notifications for session start and even for Kopete events but now options are gone and sounds won’t play the way I want.

Other problem is the action KDE (or Compiz, I really don’t know) do whenever I get closer to the upper-left corner. I setup the system for no action but it keeps showing me all the desktops. The funny thing is there are at least two places where I can setup this but none of them will really do the trick.

If you have any idea please let me know,

Pancho

Configure Desktop
Desktop - Desktop Effects - All Effects
Window Management section - Uncheck ‘Desktop Cube’

I don’t use sound notifications at all but there is a section covering it in Config Desktop too:

Thanks you for your fast reply.

Your instructions lead me to the sollution of the Expo effect. I went to CompizConfig and under the Expo effect I found the option to disable the upper-left corner action. I already disable the action where you had mentioned.

I can’t find any option for notifications. If I write notification in the search field in kmenu I get the KDE3 Notification Setup but I cant get any sound to play from there.

Thanks again,

Pancho

Thank you for your time and effort. I used that app to setup sounds in the first place. But now options like session start or kopete aren’t available.

Maybe if I update some package I would be able to reset the options/settings but I’ve searched in Yast for “notification” and nothing relevant came up.

Thanks again and again,

Pancho

You mean they are not in the drop box like these:

Exactly, thats what I meant. Sorry if I stated it wrong.
Those options are not in the drop down manu anymore.

Thanks,

Pancho

see if it brings it back

That didnt work. Sorry.

I’m hitting the sack now.
I sleep on it for you:)

Try renaming your ~/.kde4 folder, perhaps?

It’s not the most elegant solution, and it involves setting up your desktop again, but it normally works when everything goes a bit haywire.

That might do it. Notice advice is re-name but you have to do it outside X
and do:

mv /home/username*/.kde4 .kde4old

Any settings you need will be in old

I’ll try that but I’m afraid I will lose all my settings.
Thank, thank you very much,

Pancho

Well renaming the .kde4 folder did the trick but all settings are gone.

What really kills me is the fact that I don’t know what really happened :expressionless:

Thank you for all your help,

Pancho

Those settings reside in ~/.kde4 directrory which you moved (renamed). Most users just start over with new desktop config, but you could open Dolphin in split view and selectively move files from your backup (renamed folder) to ~/.kde4/share/config (one at a time), but you will have to restart desktop each time for these setting to take effect. One or more of these old config files was causing problems for you, so if you reinstate those, your problems will return. If you’re not sure what you’re doing, this could get messy, hence the first approach is more practical.

BTW, I recommend backing up your working ~/.kde4 directory once you have the desktop configured the way you like.

Thanks for the advice.
