Thread: Problem encoding audio files as mp3 (K3b, Audex)

Default Problem encoding audio files as mp3 (K3b, Audex)

I've just upgraded my system to KDE 4.3, and although CD ripping worked fine under my previous setup, I'm having problems now trying to rip CD audio files as lame-mp3 both in K3b as well as Audex.

Can someone tell me what kind of problem the following error messages point to?

    K3b error:
    Code:
    -----------------------
    K3b Version: 1.0.5

    KDE Version: 3.5.10 "release 21.9"
    QT Version: 3.3.8b
    Kernel: 2.6.27.29-0.1-pae
    Devices
    -----------------------
    MATSHITA DVD-RAM UJ-823S 1.00 (/dev/sr0, ) [CD-R, CD-RW, CD-ROM, DVD-ROM, DVD-R, DVD-RW, DVD+R, DVD+RW] [DVD-ROM, DVD-R Sequential, DVD-RAM, DVD-RW Restricted Overwrite, DVD-RW Sequential, DVD+RW, DVD+R, CD-ROM, CD-R, CD-RW] [SAO, TAO, Restricted Overwrite]
    Audex error:
    Code:
    created on 2009-09-07 14:48:53

    /bin/sh: lame: command not found
The Audex error message seems, of course, straightforward enough, but since I installed k3b-codecs, I thought I got LAME support with it (at least, I'm showing a package libmp3lame0, verison 3.98.2, from the Packman repo, so I'm not sure what Audex is complaining about).

Is k3b reporting problems at startup and what is it showing in the config section - plugins?

    Please try:

    Code:
    prompt> which lame
to make sure that you have the command available.

I've installed the 'regular' LAME package, and now everything is working fine. Thanks for your help, guys!

For reference, I now got these two packages:
    Code:
    S | Name | Type | Version | Arch | Repository
    --+-------------+---------+-----------------+------+----------------
    i | lame | package | 3.98.2-1.pm.2.1 | i586 | Extra-Packman-2
    i | libmp3lame0 | package | 3.98.2-1.pm.2.1 | i586 | Extra-Packman-2

It's so much easier with k3b-codecs installed.

I suppose I could de-install lame and experiment a bit with k3b-codecs, but let me take the shortcut and ask you:

Would the codecs installed by kd3-codecs usually be usable by other applications, for example the CD ripper I mentioned (Audex)?
