Are you finding KDE3 slower than KDE4.2?

My KDE4.3 seems to be lagging a little compared to how KDE4.2.4 performed. At the moment I'm not having a good experience with 4.3 as it's proving unstable and seems slower. It seems to take 0.5 s to respond to a click on the menu or panel.
Are others experiencing this or is my installation up the creak?

Do we need to check your repo's (zypper lr -d) and run through all the possibilities? I would look through software management and filter by repo and select System, scroll right down and see if there are any Red packages.

I performed the upgrade as instructed in your howto. Removed the KDE42 repos and added the KDE4 ones then did an update all if newer on the two KDE4 repos.

I still have a few red packages but they don't have anything to do with KDE and are not part of the KDE4 repos. For example I have the kernel packages in red as I haven't upgraded to the latest release, there are a few other reds which are specific apps not part of the openSUSE release like the hard disk monitor and parking utility etc.

EDIT: I've left the KDE42 repos in only in case the move over to KDE4 didn't work for some reason. I will now remove them. Also, the other repos that are listed but disabled are there for me to do a manual update of a specific app as and when I am ready.

Red packages are not updates, they are either roll-backs, or perhaps a manually installed .rpm (eg; Virtual Box)
It's unlikely you have Red kernel packages.

I don't want to come across in a condescending way here: But you are sure it's slower!?

Ignore my comment about the kernel packages being red they are actually in blue. Sorry it was late when I typed that.

I do know that other users with the 945 chipset have issues I cannot replicate. So far my 965 has been perfect in every way.

Yes I read about the 945 chipset problems too. Things seems to have settled down now once I disabled the desktop effects which were also causing screen freezes (see my other topic).

I had all sorts of problems with 4.2 on a Thinkpad r60e, the worst being continual lockups, which I could never resolve. Update to 4.3 has fixed all those problems and is much faster. The only real problem was when I was experimenting with desktop effects and my panels, which I have set to autohide, would not always pop out when needed, just a sort of blue bar indicating where they were hidden, as I do not really use the effects though, as I said I was just experimenting, I just turned them all off and everything is back to good.
