Default System hangs in powersaving with ATI

I am running openSUSE 11.1 x64 with an ati 3870 using the latest 9.8 version ati drivers from the amd website (the repo versions do not work on my system, it locks every few minutes). My issue is that when the system is left idle long enough for the monitor to go into dpms powersave mode, the system becomes unresponsive. The monitor does not wake up to keyboard or mouse input. I can ssh into the machine and killing X or restarting kdm has no effect. I am not sure if this is a Video problem or an acpi bug. Has anyone else experienced this issue?

Reverting back to ati 9.7 driver seems to have resolved the issue.
