Default Suse on my Asus 1005HA

    Hey everybody,

So, I have limited experience with Suse on my desktop (a while ago) and I've recently bought an Eeepc (1005HA) and would like to install linux on it. I'm not a big fan of the gnome desktop so even though everyone seems to run Eeebuntu on them I was looking for a distro with KDE or XFCE. Does Suse run well, recognize the hardware, and how hard would it be to install?

    Thanks.

    Hi
    I'm running Gnome (11.1) fine on a 1000HE, I did play with KDE4 for a
short period. Suggest you try KDE3 with it if that's your preference. My
wireless, bluetooth, sound etc worked fine as well as compiz effects.

On 11.1 i had to add the eeepc kernel module to get some function keys
to work. In 11.2 all keys are working as the module is now in the
    kernel.

Currently testing 11.2 which has it's funnies, but they are getting
    fixed

    Hi Grover,

I've bought a 1005HA myself and I tried out a couple of distros (EasyPeasy/Ubuntu, Debian 5, SuSE 11.1, Fedora 9, Mobi Linux, Liux Mint 6, Sabayon, Granular 1.0) on it. Some of them didn't even want to start.
I found none which satisfied me completely, especially I didn't find a distro which supports the DSL/Ethernet chipset.
The best to my eyes (and that, what I'm using now) is Mandriva Spring 2009. It connects via WLAN and G3-Surfstick to the internet.
And: You can make Your choice between KDE and Gnome.

SuSE 11 runs either sufficiently, but unfortunately, I couldn't manage my surfstick to run under it.
Besides that, SuSE 11.1 was easy to install, no difficulties, and provides the ISOs with the largest offer of software. Just try, no risk, and as the worst case it will cost You just time.

    keep on
    Stephan

    Hi,
    OpenSuSE 11.1 (32bit) on 1005HA?
Sure it works great! I have it installed on mine (model 1005HA-P - blue). I use KDE.

There are some issues to know anyway... Specially if you want to keep XP in a dual boot. Like needing UNetbootin to prepare booteable SD cards from the KDE Live ISO files, to know how to get the machine to boot from SD, and later how to get the wire and wireless working (installing the right drivers, disabling NetworkManager and replacing it with WICD).

    regards,
    gps

For anyone that's still having issues installing on the ASUS 1005HA, I put together my own installation guide for openSUSE 11.1. You can see it here:

    Hope this helps.

    Thanks for the contribution.

I don't have the hardware to check it out, but it is nice to receive such inputs.

I read it thoroughly and it looks very good to me. I followed a similar path to install openSUSE 11.1 on an ASUS Eee PC 205. I had some additional problems due to the VGA adapter used. I suggest that one of the admins moves this FAQ to "Advanced How To/FAQ (read only)" to keep it for posteriority. Thanks to BBBThundafor his very good work.

Thanks for taking a look at it, voodoo! Your feedback is much appreciated. I'm not sure if it's ready to go "read-only" quite yet...

It's still kind of a rough draft, so I'd recommend giving it some time for people to try following it and post questions/comments/corrections so we can improve it and/or make it more usable.
