Default No sound on HP dv6-1053cl

I have no sound on a HP Pavilion dv6-1053cl laptop with the "Intel Corporation 82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03)" (as reported by "lspci") running OpenSUSE 11.1 with KDE4.1.

    Running
    Code:
    speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav
from Konsole both as a standard and root user gives no sound.

Output of alsa-info.sh is located at http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=56...367cedca607009

In the script output I note the Codec: IDT 92HD75B3X5

Try changing your /etc/modprobe.d/sound file, adding this line to the start:
    options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1 model=hp-m4

so that the file now looks like:
    options snd-hda-intel enable_msi=1 model=hp-m4
    options snd slots=snd-hda-intel
    # u1Nb.SXH0RzeuC39:82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller
    alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
Restart your PC and test the sound.

I also note this in the script:
    Code:
    !!ALSA Version
    !!------------

    Driver version: 1.0.17
    Library version:
    Utilities version: 1.0.18
which suggests your attempt to update alsa failed.

Hence if adding the line to the /etc/modprobe.d.sound file does not work, try updating alsa by sending 6 zypper commands (not 3) to update the user space for alsa as explained from here:
    Alsa-update - openSUSE
Reboot and test your sound thoroughly.

If the user-space alsa updates suggested above do not work, one can also try installing even more cutting edge (essentially daily (or momentary) snapshot packages from the upstream GIT trees). There is guidance here for that: Alsa-update-snapshot - openSUSE
again, you must send 6 zypper commands (not 3) and be certain to pick the commands for your kernel version.

Don't forget to include the update line in the /etc/modprobe.d/sound file during the alsa update tests. Try it with and without the line.

    Great !

I see you have the daily snapshots in place.

One caution, these daily snapshots are built against a specific kernel, and if there is a kernel update in the future, it could temporary break your sound. So I recommend if you see a kernel update, do not accept the update until you have been able to confirm that there are alsa rpms built for the new kernel.

Greetings.I'm interested on installing OpenSUSE 11.1 in one of my lappies.Almost everything works fine, and one of the details is the sound.I tested first with the liveCD,and I checked that it was working, but once I did install on the hard drive it failed.I did the ALSA update to see if it was the problem and yes, problem solved. But when I tried to update Compiz the sound was missing.I do know that there is something wrong, but I can't say what's the problem.Any help will be appreciated...Some of my outputs are here

    Code:
    @linux-jf2z:~> uname -a
    Linux linux-jf2z 2.6.27.29-0.1-default #1 SMP 2009-08-15 17:53:59 +0200 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64GNU/Linux

    Code:

    alsa-firmware-1.0.17-1.42
    alsa-plugins-pulse-1.0.18-6.13
    alsa-1.0.18-8.9

    alsa-driver-kmp-default-1.0.20.20090824_2.6.27.29_0.1-4.1
    alsa-plugins-maemo-1.0.18-6.13
    alsa-tools-gui-1.0.18-1.16
    alsa-utils-1.0.18-6.4
    Code:
    @linux-jf2z:~> cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound

    options snd slots=snd-hda-intel
    # u1Nb.tLIXAX6ERM5:82801I (ICH9 Family) HD Audio Controller
    alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
I see driver and utils are not the same version, but that's what I got after the update.

Any help will be gladly received

Hi Raizz. Welcome to openSUSE forums.

First thing. Typically, unlike some other forums, if you tag on to someone else's forum on openSUSE forums, you are less likely to get the focussed help that you deserve. Hence its FAR BETTER to start a new thread, with an appropriate Title.

I almost missed this post, and I suspect others probably will miss it as well. Plus multiple help requests in one thread are REALLY hard to follow for web based users. So PLEASE NEXT TIME START A NEW THREAD.

    OK, nuff said ...

I need more information to help. Please set up your mixer EXACTLY how you believe it should be setup and then run the diagnostic script, with your laptop connected to the Internet:
    /usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh
Run the script the first time with root permissions, and when it asks if you wish to update the script, select YES to update (it needs root permissions to apply the update to /usr/sbin). Run the script the second time with regular user permissions, and when it asks if you wish to SHARE/UPLOAD the information select that option. I'm totally stunned by the number of users who insist on NOT selecting that option and then claim the script does not work. Its very frustrating.

That script when it completes, will upload your laptop's audio software and hardware configuration to the internet and give you the URL where the information is located. Please post that URL here.

With that, and the information you already provided, I might be able to make a recommendation.

Was their a significance of posting the output from both with and with out root permissions? ... I did not notice any difference.

Anyway, I note an Aspire 5735 with a 64-bit openSUSE-11.1 with the 2.6.27.29-0.1-default kernel, and an ALC268 hardware audio codec.

I also immediately spotted the wrong configuration in your mixer which will block sound. Now this may not be your problem, but it definitely does block your sound. So please fix this and then report wrt your sound. Specifically I note:
    Simple mixer control 'Master',0
    Capabilities: pvolume pvolume-joined pswitch pswitch-joined
    Playback channels: Mono
    Limits: Playback 0 - 64
    Mono: Playback 64 [100%] [0.00dB] [off]

the Master volume is muted. With that muted there can be no sound.

Like I noted, there may be other problems, but this one must be corrected first.

Yes,I did that while I was playing with the mixer before running the script. But the result was the same with the master volume 100%.Just in case, here is the output not muted.I didn't see any difference with root permission and without root permissions and you are right about the laptop model and codec.Again, with the "mute" fixed

By saying the result was the same, I assume you mean NO audio/sound with master volume at 100% not muted (note I asked the script be run with the EXACT configuration the way you thought the mixer should be setup, so that was confusing to me, as it suggested you wanted the master volume muted).

I also assume you tested the audio with both root and regular user permissions.

I also assume you tested the audio with headset connected and headset not connected.

I assume you are basing your no sound assessment on a quality check for audio, and not on an application that may or may not be configured properly ...ie when testing if you have sound, please copy and paste the following speaker-test into a Gnome terminal or a kde konsole:

    speaker-test -Dplug:front -c2 -l5 -twav

Note Linux is case sensitive, and D is not the same as d. To stop the above test, while the konsole/xterm has the mouse focus, press <CTRL><C> on the keyboard. Note you should check your mixer settings (kmix if using KDE, and alsamixer if using Gnome) to ensure that PCM and Master Volume are set around 95%. Once you have basic sound established you can back off to lower volume levels. Note the test for surround sound is different.

If that test yields errors (and its not uncommon to get errors there), try instead this more simple test:
    speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav
You should hear a female voice saying 'FRONT LEFT', 'FRONT RIGHT' five times. Its quite common that one of those speaker tests will work and one will NOT work, so don't be distressed if that is the case. IF that test gives sound, stop now, post that the sound test gives sound, and we will look at other possible causes for your applications not giving you the sound you want (such as missing codecs, using the wrong packaged version ... etc ... ).

Or alternatively, for testing the simple playback, use aplay program. Prepare a WAV file and simply run like:
    Code:
    aplay -vv somefile.wav
With the option -vv, aplay shows the verbose information of the PCM device, and a VU-peak meter during playing the file.

Try those speaker-tests as both a regular user, and also with root permissions. If you have a headset, try with your headset plugged in, and also with your headset not plugged in (for speakers).

If any one of those tests work (and its common for only 1 of the 3 to work) then please advise, as your problem may be with codecs, and not with sound configuration.

Still, if my assumptions are correct, and you did follow the above approach when testing, and there is no sound, then please advise. At that point I'll get you to update your alsa version again (as it does not look right to me) , first with alsa user space updates, and then if that fails, with daily snapshot updates, and if that fails, then try forcing various boot configuraitons in the /etc/modprobe.d/sound file.
