Default OpenSuse 11.1, will not save resolution

I'm having a problem that is causing me to pull my hair out.

I'm rather new to Linux, so I installed a copy of openSuse 11.1 as a VMWare Server 2.1 guest OS. So that I could learn how it works and play around with it.

Everything works fine except the darn resolution. It defaults to 1400 x 900 no matter what I do.

I have the monitor set as an LCD 1680 x 1050@60hz monitor.

The resolution in the Yast admin -> Hardware -> Graphics Card and Monitor Settings, is set at 1680x1050 (WSXGA+).

When I go to configure desktop -> display, and change it there to 1680 x 1050, it changes it immediately. But as soon as I log out or restart it reverts to 1400 x 900.

Please can someone help me make the darn resolution stay 1680 x 1050?! Thank you!

If you're in the KDE desktop use Krandr to set resolution. There's a similar one in Gnome (both based on xrandr) but I'm not sure what it's called.

Could this be a limitation of your Host vm or OS?

I am not sure on this though it is just a thought as I do not use VMWare.

Hmm as I said I'm new to linux, not sure where to find this Krandr or the unknown name in gnome?

As for the vmware limitation, no it's not a limitation of VMWare. If it we're I would not be able to even set the resolution to 1680 x 1050 and it actually go to that resolution. I've got a lot of VMWare guest OS's installed and this is the only one that gives me a problem going to this resolution.

I run at this resolution because I usually run my vmware boxes full screen on my 2nd monitor and this is the max reso that monitor supports.

Have you tried opening a terminal and then as root typing 'init 3' to take you to run-level 3 (single user mode). Once there, login as root and set up the xserver using sax2.
