    Default Pointless KDE 4 widgets?

What on earth is the point of the "character selector"? Judging by its icon (an accented a) I thought it might offer easy access to non-standard characters but all it gives you is the standard QWERTY keys as on the keyboard. What use is that??? Or am I missing something (there's no documentation)?
Many of the other widgets are similarly useless or buggy, but this one's the most intriguing as it holds out the promise of being seriously useful.

Why useful? I don't see it. For years now we have been able to compose almost every possible character, in way we can decide ourselves. r dn't wẽ? I'm using R-Alt-accent-character since it's possible.

On the other hand, useless things can be a liberation to the mind...

OK, whatever. I was trying to assign it some usefulness, as an easy point-and-click method. But if it can't even do that...
