Thread: 11.1 (64) misidentifies intel 5300agn as 5100agn

    Default 11.1 (64) misidentifies intel 5300agn as 5100agn

11.1 (64, kernel 2.6.27.23-0.1-default) misidentifies wireless card intel 5300agn as 5100agn. this error shows up in my installation of 11.1 (64) from retail dvd on a thinkpad x301, but I (and you) can replicate this error also with the live CD (that you can download from Software.openSUSE.org , Index of /distribution/11.1/iso )

aside, this is only the first of the 2 or 3 issues I am trying to clear up to get my wireless card to work. it seems it is falsely reported to work out of the box. strangely, I can see surrounding networks on scanning, but cannot connect to any, even unencrypted ones, not with (k)networkmanager, not with yast, not with iwconfig/dhclient

    You need to install the compat-wireless package, or 2.6.3{0,1}
kernels. The Intel people have made many, many changes since 2.6.27
and your device is more likely to work with a later kernel. Note:
These changes are usually not ported back to older kernels due to
    changes in the underlying kernel.

I thought it has been reported working for 11.1 (which equals 2.6.27). I bought my hardware based on these reports. Who does this erroneously reporting? Is there any reliable info on opensuse out there? How do I update to 2.6.30? I recently did run online update, and my kernel was updated from 2.6.27.7 or so to 2.6.27.23.

I have no idea who reports the wrong data. I don't use Intel wireless
devices. I do know that the Intel development process is not as good
as other drivers. They keep their changes internal until they pass
regulatory tests. As a result, their external testing is minimal and a
lot of code has problems in the outside world.

Kernel 2.6.30 is not in the standard distribution. I'm not sure which
repository has it, but using it would cause problems with your
graphics driver if you are using either the NVidia or ATI driver.

I would suggest that you enable the repo at
    http://download.opensuse.org/reposit...E_11.1_Update/
and install the compat-wireless package for your computer and get the
latest version of the wireless driver without any impact on the
    graphics driver.

2.6.27.23 is not the latest kernel for 11.1. 2.6.27.25 is the latest.

I have the 5300AGN working on 11.1. It "just works" with the kernel (albeit its speed could be faster). I did not have to "tune" anything on either KDE-3.5.10 nor KDE-4.1.3. I selected the SSID, the encryption, entered the pass phrase, and it connected.

I think the 5100AGN does work for users with the 2.6.27 kernel (I'm certain I have read of success stories). I recommend you put ALL settings back to the ORIGINAL defaults, and then simply focus on SSID, encryption method and pass phrase. It should be that simple (and it is that simple on the 5300AGN on my Dell Studio 15 laptop).

installed the compat-wireless package after updating to 2.6.27.25

card is still identified as 5100agn. further, the card is not started either. the switch is turned 'on' but the indicator led is off.

Have you configured it? From what others are saying, it should "just
    work".

yes I configured it (among otherthings to obtain the IP address via dhcp).

The error is easily replicated with the live CD!

Is that not the default setting?

    What encryption did you try?

googling for '"direct probe responded" "authentication with ap" "timed out"' shows that a number of other people have the same issue.
I tried everything, different wireless card (a linksys wusb54gc), different operating system (ubuntu 9.04, 8.10, live cd, 2.6.28, 2.6.27), different routers in different places, un/encryption, channels, ABGN, disabling blutooth, network-manager, yast network settings, iwconfig, wicd ... nothing.

there is a major bug in the kernel!!!
