Default SUSE install probes gfx, goes black: Radeon HD4650/Sony Vaio

Hi all, Got a showstopping problem. SUSE/X11/whatever dies attempting to recognize the graphics card/monitor during installation. I've got a fairly new Sony Vaio with a ATI Radeon Mobility HD 4650 card factory installed. The last I hear from SUSE during the install is "The system will now probe the graphics card. The monitor may flicker, please be patient." Then it does flicker -- then it goes black, and stays black forever without a peep.

My first issue with Linux and this machine is that it does not fail gracefully... it just dies and goes black. Not very professional, it should recover somehow. It was able to find my monitor and display a non-optimal image before it tried to configure itself.

More importantly, how can I get the darn thing to work? Any suggestions?

    Thanks.

    Which version of SuSE?

Also when installing do not let it do the auto-config ( there is a choice
during the start of the installation ) and select a standard module like
    vesa.

Or in some cases you might need to do a text install, not as pretty using
ncurses but exactly the same choices.

When it is all finished you can then install the propriety drivers.

Well, I've got it working pretty well... I rebooted and then did not continue the installation. SUSE (11.1) came up with the K desktop running at 800x600, which makes for some huge type and fat windows. However, I was able to change the screen resolution after a few tries, black screens, and reboots. So now I have something usable, so actually, that's great.

Thanks to the people who replied, it helped a lot and I appreciate it.
