I have opensuse 11.0 and the version of gtk+ that comes with it is 2.12. When I open yast and check for updates it only has 2.12 as the newest version. Why isn’t there a prepackaged gtk+ 2.16 offered in yast?

YaST will only show you the available packages in the repositories you have
previously configured. No newer version available means that there is no
repo providing that release.

At least, I cannot find a gtk2 version newer than 2.12 for opensuse 11.0

if you are missing a feature or capability which is in 2.16 but not
2.12, your options are:
-
wait until 2.16 shows up in the repos (remember, packages are not
built by folks on a giant corporation’s fat payroll (with several
billionaires in the executive suites)…instead, volunteers do it in
their own time) -
hope it is in openSUSE 11.2
-
download the source and compile/install it for your own use
by the way, the latest stable is 2.16.5, but you can grab an unstable
2.17.5 if you are really in need of the features it will have…
i think there is a way for you to volunteer your time and become part
of the package building team, which might help getting things like
this in the repos faster…check it out:
