    Default will not boot

    I downloaded SuSE 11.1 Live,
It booted up fine on my HP laptop,
It booted up fine on our Acer, second desktop,
An old XP computer, will not see it, it goes straight past into XP, (CD RW is first Boot )
Our main computer,(self build ), it will not run.
The computer boots SuSE, the words Open SuSE come on screen
The white installation bar goes across the screen,
When it reaches the end, the screen goes black,
The boot sound is heard, and the CDRW stops flashing.
The screen stays black, after 30 minutes its still black,
It will not let me eject the disc, so I turn of the computer

If I read this correctly, you did not even get to the menu where you are giving the choice to select an install ? Or do you go thru the install menu's but the problem happens on the 1st reboot during the install ?

If you never get an install menu, then that does not look good. You could check BIOS to see if there is something there that is causing a hiccup (sometimes a bad "plug and play" option can cause a hiccup). If you have any USB devices connected (other than mouse/keyboard) you could try removing those.

If you get the initial menu (ie boot from hard drive, install ... ) you could choose the safe settings install ... or even choose a text install (and then during the text install select the appropriate desktop (I like KDE3)).

If using a KVM, you could try connecting direct to the monitor.

    To add to oldcpu post:
You can type 3 in the boot option in the boot menu and hit enter. After that login as root without password and type:
    startx
To me, it looks like a graphic card issue(about the blank screen).
Which graphic card do you have on the main computer?

And the issue about, not booting from CDROM can also be from your cd drive, check it and make sure it is working fine. OR maybe hiccup as oldcpu mentioned above.

Do you mean that the install goes black and you cannot install or run the
disk or do you mean you have used the disk to install and then installed
system does not boot to a GUI?

If you do mean the live CD starts but then goes black then there is
something hardware wise that the disk cannot handle?

What is the hardware you are trying to run it on, especially the graphics?

would be nice if your keyboard had a question mark...but, i suppose
one of your questions might be:

Q1. Why does the CD boot fine on the HP and Acer but not the XP computer?

    A. maybe the XP computer's CD/DVD drive is just a little bit out of
kilter...maybe its lens is coated with cigarette smoke--have you tried
cleaning the lens? (see manufacturers documentation)...and about a
hundred more maybes could follow, like: maybe you didn't check the
md5sum prior to burning the CD as you would have had you read this:
    http://tinyurl.com/6jwtg9

    maybe another question is:

Q2. It begins to boot but instead of the desktop coming up the screen
just goes black--what do i do now?

    A. enter this in a google search box and find all the many different
things that can cause the black screen:

site:forums.opensuse.org "black screen" live cd "11.1"

you can get a creative with the "black screen" part because people
call that different things....like you can replace it as:

site:forums.opensuse.org "no gui" live cd "11.1"

or, you can leave off the "11.1" and then see that this has been going
on forever, with SOME machines, and SOME disks...like:

    site:forums.opensuse.org "black screen" live cd

there is recent proof that it can be caused by having less than 500 MB
    of RAM...
