Exclamation messed up plasma desktop while moving 4000 files

    Hi all,

Just now I messed up my desktop a bit.
While moving almost 4000 files in Dolphin, somehow the files stuck to my mousepointer and ended up as widgets/plasmoids or whaterveroids on my desktop. The files were moved alright. The plasmoids are just empty pointers that clutter up my desktop, as the files to which they pointed have just been moved.

Each of them can be removed by hand, but that will take hours and hours of time.

They cannot be found with a normal find statement, I don't know where the icons are located.
Does anyone know how to get rid of those the easy way?

    Thanks,

    Joepie

I was too late to edit my post:

    I'm running opensuse 11.1, KDE4.2.
Being an almost compulsory updater, I'm running the latest stable bits.

    Thanks,

if i understand correctly, you must have a very large number of icons (each a plasma containment) on your desktop background... which is completely different from dragging them into folderview.

if i were trying to correct that, the fastest way would be to log out to the kdm login screen and choose a Menu/console login session... log in as the user with the problem and rm /.kde4/share/config/plasma-appletrc.

exit, get the kdm login screen and start a new session normally. You'll have to rebuild some parts of your normal desktop.

option would be to manually edit the same file, but might be time consuming.

    good luck.

    Hi j_xavier,

Thanks for your reply. Two hours ago, I managed to completely kill my .kde4 directory by messing around and not paying enough attention.

Fortunately I could find a backup .kde(3!) directory and lost only a few of months of emails - no more than 50 orso nowadays. Ofcourse the icons/widgets are gone as well.

Funny part of this is: I hardly ever lost any data since 1995 even while using Windows. Go figure this one out: yesterday I bought a brandnew QNAP NAS, which is testdriving right now and just didn't have a complete snapshot yet.

But again thanks for your reply, I have learned something about the widgets and will use it next time I do something stupid. I'll go have a healty laugh at myself now

    Hi all,

This time I was in luck; I found some remains of my .kde4 directory and was able to reconstruct my settings.
The tip j_xavier gave was on the spot: I deleted ~/.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletrc and the 4000 midgets were gone again

    Gotta love linux,
