    Patience ....

Now then. You might want to tell us where the files are. But in dolphin you can go to view - panels - terminal

    makes it easy for you
    navigate to the location
switch to su in the terminal
    Code:
    rm *hardtodeletefile.sod
(*replace with the file name you want to delete)TAB will auto complete after first 2 or 3 letters

Tells me the files and directory do not exist. However, they are staring me right in the face. Two files have x kb, the other has zero.

But what files are they and where are they in the filesystem?

They could be virtual files if you are looking in /var/ or other places that
    do not exist.

But unless you give us a clue we do not know.

I have ownership and the group can read. Cannot change the permissions. Dolphin puts a LOCK on the file if I try and change permissions.
Cannot delete the dir and cannot empty the dir.

You must be missing something - If all else fails try a rename :
the command is: mv *filename *filename_old

    or
try a live cd like knoppix.
