Thread: Gnome can't suspend but KDE 4.1 can!?

Default Gnome can't suspend but KDE 4.1 can!?

    Hi all,
I have had this problem for quite some time, at first it didn't bother me. I just couldn't suspend using gnome. But then I got into KDE(IMHO I didn't like it...) and there suspend worked. I tried various articles, like the one on this site about s2ram. Nothing helped. But as KDE can suspend I want to try using KDE's way of suspending(which works) with GNOME(which now can't suspend). Does anyone have any idea how to figure out the command KDE uses?

    Thanks for any answer

I'm not sure it will be possible. The most likely possibility is kde3's powersave (kpowersave).
The power manager in kde4 is built in to the base packages rather than a application in it's own right. At least it is that way now, I think the original kde4.1.3 shipped with powerdevil as a separate application but it was later integrated - but either way, it will not work with powersave.

I would try removing gnome-power-manager and installing kpowersave.
If it doesn't show in the menu, you can launch with: kpowersave

Well, I tried your suggestion, but it didn't help there must be something different, some core problem, in the way they both suspend. The only thing is that I thought that they both suspended via the same core system. But that doesn't seem to be so. Anyway, I edited the first post with some more info about my problem.

Edit: seems I can't edit the first post so here more details:
    - My pc exactly freezes when it says: suspending consoles(and yes, I can see console output when suspending)
    - This is GNOME only, KDE goes easily past this point
    - In fact I want to know what KDE does different, so I can make GNOME do the same. (I really don't like KDE)

yeah, I read the post, I tried it and I'm not really finished trying all the posible switches for s2ram, to find out which is the best on my system. But I noticed something weird... In runlevel 3 it easily goes into suspend, once I init to runlevel 5 I can't suspend anymore But as I said, i'm still trying all combinations on runlevel 5.
Status: I had all combinatiions, and I'm now adding -v to every
    combination...

Ok status update: THIS IS SOOOOOOO WEIRD....

It works, I finally thought, because I had logged into KDE and then switched to a terminal console (Ctrl+Alt+F1). But then I logged back into gnome, and again in the same terminal console EXACT THE SAME COMMAND didn't work anymore
    (btw the command was: s2ram -f -v -a 3)
ppl, plz help me, im getting frustrated

Try to suspend with this command:

    powersave -u

Thank you for your reply, and I tried it immediattely. But it didn't work . It forze again at 'suspending consoles'. And I'm now nearly through with all the combinations for s2ram. I gues I have got to prepare to switch to KDE. (which will need a lot of work, because I don't like it at all now. It's got a far to messy feeling.)

    The output of

    cat /var/log/pm-suspend.log

may yield some clues about the problem. Have you read this Pm-utils guide?

If you do end up using KDE4, make sure you upgrade to KDE4.2.x or even KDE4.3, as there have been many improvements over KDE4.1.

    + /usr/sbin/s2disk --config /var/lib/s2disk.conf
the last entry is a try to hibernate, which failed just as miserably as the suspend did And I'm reading that pm-utils guide right now, but I don't know if it's really helping

edit: ooh the whole entry is for hibernate... well I'm running a yast install now, and I'll update it just as soon as the Yast install finished(and I rebooted my frozen pc...)
