Opensuse 11.1, KDE 4.x, panels

When I first installed 11.1 and KDE4.2.x, I noticed a great many differences to 10.2 and KDE 3.x. One of the ones was a glass like panel on the top part of the screen, which contained some default icons, Firefox, YAST (I think), Wastebin, and so on.

I started to play around with the desktop settings, and didn’t notice that I had, during my “play-around” deleted the “glass” panel. I have been looking to see how to get it back but can’t find it.

Can someone please help me out here. Also, I would like to know how to place new icons or remove them in that panel.

Thank you.

Drag your desktop folder onto the screen and it should reappear.

You may have to right click on it to restore its appearance to what you want.

Sorry, but where do I find the desktop folder?

Right click on your Desktop then choose add widgets. Search for Folder View, click it, then choose add widget. That will bring the glass panel back.

I believe it displays your Desktop folder by default. If you have widgets unlocked, then hover over the panel, you’ll see a tab to the right of it. Click on the wrench icon to configure what folder to view in the glass panel.

@silkmaze
Ian is correct.
Just to explain. kde4 is quite different to kde3 and the desktop is really plasma workspace and actually not the desktop you know of old. Desktop of course is a location in your /home/username/Desktop
You can browse to that location say in dolphin and see your desktop icons - whatever.
But to have that location now on the “Desktop”/Plasma Workspace you have to use Folder View, which puts a folder widget on the Plasma Workspace. By default it might be configured to /home/username, but see the spanner in the folder toolbar, use that to configure to the location you want. Resize and place where you want it.
Then right click Workspace and lock widgets.

Thank you Ian and Caf (you don’t mind Caf, do you caf4926? After all we’ve been through, I feel like we are on first name terms  ).

I got it. I have set the default folder to the desktop. How do I place other icons into that folder? I placed a link to Thunderbird on my desktop but it isn’t in the desktop folder. Can I move the icon, from where-ever it is being kept to the desktop folder so that it appears in the glass panel or do I have to go into the for desktop folder using Konqueror or Dolphin and create a shortcut for Thunderbird in there, or for any other application I want to have in the panel?

Hi,

What you can do is type the name of the program in the kickoff menu, then just drag the icon into the desktop folder in the Folder View widget(the glass panel). It might ask you if you want to copy it or link it there, choose copy.

Thank you Ian.

I have just discovered another problem. I rebooted this morning and after setting up everything for my days’ work, I discovered that the 3D effects I had installed had disappeared. I had spent the weekend trying out the different things, §D cube, sphere etc and now they were gone.

I called up desktop settings and opened system settings and discovered that two tabs were missing, as can be see here:

I have no idea how that happened. I had only switched off the PC because I was off island, in St. Maarten, for the day on Saturday and there had been signs of a thunder storm here. Since the power company isn’t that great, and while I do have a UPS, rather safe than sorry.

Now that function is gone.

Where can I check to see how to get it back.

I have also notived that certain shortcut keys don’t work. If I press Alt-F2, nothing, normally a little cli window pops up and allows me to type in a command to start a app or to start the app in su mode. Not any more. Ctrl-Esc doesn’t work anymore either.

Both of them worked perfectly just a day or so ago, suddenly then don’t.

Help please.

In that image you have ‘No Effect’ for desktop switching
So are you sure it’s not just a matter of config. I’m not sure why it should have changed since you powered down. But Plasma will kick off effects if they cause problems during boot.

This is mine

Talk about the demo effect. I just checked again and this is what I have now.

My 3D effects are back. However my Alt+F2 and Ctrl+Esc are not.
Any suggestions?

Do you have this setting, otherwise changes you make in a session may be lost.

I do have exactly what you showed.

Sorry, I forgot to upload my pic.

It will be down to some user config but it’s very difficult for us to pin it down for you. And I’m on 4.3 RC2 now, so I can’t compare like for like.
Just try different approaches to finding the solution. Does the same thing happen if you logout and back in, or is it only when you reboot?
If you create a new user keeping the default settings but just enabling desktop effects, does it happen the same there.

I really like the 3D effects, so I won’t fool around with what I have at the moment. I see what happens when I reboot the next time.

What is really liked was the Alt+F2 function. What other method can I use to open an app in KDE as the SU? or am I reduced to opening a console and go through the process there?

What do I have to do to open up the “Task Master” of linux, seeing as how I can’t use Ctrl+Esc.

Probably should add it to your favorites:

Kickoff menu>Applications>System>Monitor>System Monitor

That’s the more details version of the alt+esc task manager.

Great I got that. Any suggestions about the Alt+F2 problem?!

Well, Krunner is part of the kdebase4-workspace package, so open Yast Software Manager and search for kdebase4-workspace then click the check next to it to reinstall it. Post back with your results.

Take Care,

Ian

Installed. There was a package with the same name but with the extra name of branded. I didn’t install that.

What is branding? Is there a difference between the two different packages? Do I need to install both? Can I install both without problems?

As for krunner. Typed it in the search in the kick-off and nothing turned up. Have I done something wrong?

Ian suggested search as above.
krunner is part of that. If you were searching for krunner you would need to check the .rpm provides box for the search.
