Thread: command line program

  1. #1

    Default command line program

    Just loaded Opensuse 11.1. Was immediately depressed to discover the command line program 'locate' was not installed by default. I can just install it, of course, but I thought I'd ask the forum if there was some other program that takes the place of locate. Is there some such program?

    Thanks,

    $ locate

    The program 'locate' can be found in following packages:
    * findutils-locate [ path: /usr/bin/locate, repository: zypp (openSUSE_11.1_DVD_ISO) ]
    * findutils-locate [ path: /usr/bin/locate, repository: zypp (repo-oss) ]
    * findutils-locate [ path: /usr/bin/locate, repository: zypp (openSUSE_11.1-0_1) ]

    Try installing with: sudo zypper install findutils-locate

    -bash: locate: command not found

    There you go, no more reason to be depressed.

    Thanks ken_yap. That did the trick. Also glad to know about zypper.

    Just to add to this discussion - locate, find, and whereis functionality outlined:

    Locate Find Whereis - Linux StepByStep

    Linux Command 8 – find, locate, whereis, sort, grep Linux from beginning
