Question Some doubts about Oracle9i & OpenSuSe 11.1

    Hello,

I am planning to install OpenSuSe 11.1 on my IBM x 3650 server. It has ServeRAID v8 array.

    Few questions as follows :

-Standard x86 oracle9i would get installed?
-Does x86 OpenSuSe 11.1 support XEON processor or do I need to download 64 bit iso?
-I also want to install Oracle10g on the same server. Will there any problem?
    - Any1 can comment on IO thoughput of OpenSuSe 11.1 on EXT3 partition? I am having SAS hdd's 300 gb each.
-And last question how stable OpenSuSe 11.1 for Oracle? I want to set it up as a permanant Oracle DB server.

    Regards,
    Amey.

The OpenSuSE installation does not install Oracle. Not sure what you're
asking here but OpenSuSE definitely doesn't ship with Oracle. There is an
'orarun' package that sets up a server for Oracle installation later but
that's completely different (as evidenced by its not even being one
    megabyte in size).

Yes, OpenSuSE is fine with Xeons. If you have 64-bit Xeons you should use
64-bit OS's most likely but that's your call. Xeons, when they are 64-bit
    capable, are also backward-compatible with 32-bit OS's.

Oracle does not support OpenSuSE 10 or 11 but Oracle 10g works just fine
on SLES 10 which technically isn't supported either. You may want to try
Oracle 11g just for its newness and the likelihood it will be supported on
    current distributions.

I imagine if you can get it working it will be fine.

    Good luck.

    Thanks for reply.

ab@novell : Sure I know Oracle doesnt ship with OpenSuSe or vice versa. My question was about product compatibility. I asumme I shall download oracle cpio files for linux from Oracle site.

Seems like I need to buy SuSe Enterprise. I only found 2 vendors in my region who sells and provide support for SuSe enterprise.

Oracle says that it supports Oracle 9i on SuSe Enterprise edition for installation of 9i , 10g. I thought why not give a try to freeware OpenSuSe 11.1 but seems impossible.

@vendetta18 : Thanks too for info. Developers in my office want Ora 9i and 10g instance thats why. Great to see OpenSuSe user from Pune. I am from Pune too. Will meet soon.

    Regards,
    Amey.
