I have a printer/scanner/fax that’s on the network. i have the printer part set up through cups but how do I set up the scanner? What programs can I use on opensuse to see the scanner?

Sane has built-in support for network clients (even scanner has not ethernet
port) so you won’t face any problem if your scanner is properly detected
and configured.

Are you planning to connect other linux clients?

I’m sorry but that page doesn’t help. Here’s my setup:
Scanner/printer is wirelessly connected to the network.
I altered “/etc/xinetd.d/sane-port” to comment out the “disabled = yes”. I added the network address “192.168.1.103” of the scanner/printer to “/etc/sane.d/saned.conf”.
However, when I try to start up xsane, it fails with “no devices available”.
What am I missing?

Better tell us what is your scanner (brand and model).
Sane netwok scanning will allow you to share your scanner, but it requires:
- A supported scanner
- A detected, setup and configured scanner in the host computer
- A client computer that supports sane

I dunno if sane supports wifi devices :-?. If your device is HP, try with hp
toolbox (hplip drivers).

You are trying to setup the scanner in a different way. Dunno if sane
supports that, you’ll have to investigate a bit.

Exactly - that’s the problem. Sane requires a scanner hooked in by USB. My scanner is entirely wireless. It’s only connected to via wifi (through the network).
This works fine for printing with CUPs - I just use the IP address. But for a scanner I have no idea why I can’t do the same.

May we have you scanner brand and model?
I presume that using a wifi scanner it closely depends on the backend used,
that is, not all scanner drivers are network-aware.

Sorry about that, it’s an HP OfficeJet 6500 Wireless.
But I think the problem’s with sane. It doesn’t have the ability (from what I can gather) to hook up a scanner via IP address. Instead, you have to be hosting it via sane and a USB hookup and that instance of sane can share it wirelessly. Am i wrong?

Thanks
Hey, there is still hope! You can try hplip, your device seems to be listed
there ;-).

No, you are right. I also think so. Sane works that way, by using
a “client/host” setup.

Thanks! I’ll check that out and see if hplip will work.
I’m having a similar problem, but I have a different scanner; I have a Dell v515w All-In-One. Can anyone help me?
