Thread: hidden files, big

    Default hidden files, big

I tried to do backup of my home/user folder in K3B and I was prompted that I have 78 MBs of data. I was prompted to decide whether I want to add hidden files too. when I press Add it added 1.8GB of data. I was surprised that such a lot of data is hidden. But, what is strange is that besides usual conf files I do not see anything so big.

    Please advise.

Do you have a lot of old email, especially email with big attachments?

No, I always empty trashbox and in my Inbox there are 2 files only of maybe 10kb.
Is there any cache for streamed audio or video?

It's not just files, there are many hidden folders. You can make them visible in Dolphin by the option 'Show hidden files and folders'.Then you will see, their names all start with a dot (.). They contain settings etc. for your programs and your desktop. For example /home/user/.kde4 contains all settings and data concerning KDE4 programms, /home/user/.ooo3 contains all your OpenOffice.org settings. So far some explanation.

Now, open Search Files and Folders. Check hidden....Search for only folders and files bigger than 1 GB. That should tell you something more. Get back to us, if you need more help

I know for folder. I See just configuration folders and they are very small indeed. When I go in Konqueror and use info list view I see folders just with several megs of size. FIles that are not hidden are 78.4MBs. But hidden files are additional 1.7GB which is strange. Thus, there should be some cache that I do not see or is not reported well.
    Any advise?

I realised that K3B reported as hidden files those which are in subfolders. That was misleading me.
Actually, those files should not be reported as hidden since hidden are those files and folders with configuration details.
Maybe this may be reported to K3B guys.
    Thanks,

    Try baobab http://applocator.googlepages.com/Baobab.png
It's in the gnome-utils package, you can install it with yast.

It's a fast and light program.
There are others if you don't like gtk apps like kdirstat (kde3) or
filelight (kde4) and the commandline offcourse, but i don't know how to get
a quick overview with that like i can with baobab.
