    How can I get a terminal to open up automatically when I start KDE?

    Desktop Config - Advanced tab - Auto start
    add applications in there

    Even better: use yakuake. Just start it once, log out and log in, and it's there, invoking a terminal view from the top down of your desktop by simply hitting F12
