Hi everyone.
I’m new in the openSUSE world.
I was wondering:
How can I find aMSN? I looked among the basic repository, but there’s not… How can I use more repositories, so I can find more softwares? and which repositories would be recommended?
Are there some tricks to make Firefox faster yet safer???
Hope I’ll be able to learn soon as much as I can from this great OS!
Thanks, openSUSErs!!!
Firefox 3.5 which is coming out ‘soon’ will offer substantial speed improvements on Linux - it will incorporate many of the enhancements the other platforms have had (such as code optimization).
There are ways to improve the speed, for example disabling IPv6 may prove to be beneficial for some users - especially if you notice that “resolving” addresses seems to take way too long.
As for additional repositories… well that depends completely on your needs and what you wish to do. For additional repositories, take a looksee here: Repositories - openSUSE-Community
Ideally with OSS, Non-Oss, Update and Packman you’ll find little need to add any others. If you see one clicks think carefully before adding them.
It is rarely that anyone needs any more than those 4, perhaps wireless and graphics. Then if you feel that you need to add additional ones then consider do I need it enabled many times the answer is no.
Once you have packman you should find most using software package management or zypper certainly expect you’ll find amsn.
Edit:
Talk about duplication I miss the ability of seeing who is viewing a thread…
This won’t really answer your question but why not use Pidgin?
Faster? There are general things like disabling IPv6 that seems to
help performance if your ISP doesn’t support IPv6. Also you could disable
Beagle (see various thread in this forum) to improve overall system
performance at the cost of searching within the system using Beagle. What
do you mean by safer? Unless you’re running as ‘root’ you’re pretty safe,
though you can add things like AdBlock Plus or NoScript add-ons to Firefox
so you have more say over what sites can do with the browser.
Good luck.
