Thread: Amarok "can't play mp3's" and pathetic volume...

  1. #1

    Default Amarok "can't play mp3's" and pathetic volume...

    Well first of all, using the Amarok wizard and having it collect all my music files, I tried to actually use the thing, and it says it can't play mp3s. I really have no idea what kind of media player can't play mp3s, so is this some sort of error?

    EDIT: I fixed the volume problem, but Amarok still refuses to play music.

    It may help if you provide more information about what is going on. As for your issue the first thing that comes to mind is your libxine installation. Legally SUSE can not ship with support for several audio and video codecs. Luckly the Packman repo has everything that you need to solve this issue, just add the repo and update libxine1.

    I hope that this helps you get Amarok working to play mp3s

    Thanks, I'll try that!

    Uh-oh. When I try to add the "Packman" repository as the "Multi-media and Restricted Format Installation Guide" thread says, I get this error:

    Code:
    Download (curl) error for 'http://ftp.gwdg.de/pub/linux/misc/packman/suse/11.1/repo/repoindex.xml':
    Error code:
    Error message: Couldn't resolve host 'ftp.gwdg.de'
    Perhaps the same problem I had with the updates? Something about servers closer to my physical location would help?

    Should the name be "Packman" or "Packman USA"? In any case, I tried both and got the same error:

    Code:
    Download (curl) error for 'http://packman.unixheads.com/suse/11.1/repo/repoindex.xml':
    Error code:
    Error message: Couldn't resolve host 'packman.unixheads.com'

    On a 64bit system, I had to install the following packages in order to get amarok playing mp3 files and audio streams :

    gstreamer-0_10-32bit
    libxine1-32bit
    gstreamer-0_10-plugins-base-32bit

    But I should say that getting the right sound and video codecs working with the different players isn't very pleasant on openSUSE.

    Copy/paste the 8 lines below in a file (example: packman.repo)

    [repo-packman]
    name=Packman repository (openSUSE_11.1)
    type=rpm-md
    baseurl=http://packman.mirrors.skynet.be/pub/packman/suse/11.1/
    gpgcheck=1
    gpgkey=http://packman.mirrors.skynet.be/pub/packman/suse/11.1/repodata/repomd.xml.key
    enabled=1
    autorefresh=0

    Then, import the repository from that file by typing in a terminal:

    sudo zypper ar -r packman.repo

    That should do it.

    It appears to have worked.

    However, I'm getting the same error as the Packman one the "Videolan VLC" one...
