Thread: KDE plasma desktop folder, always missing icon

  1. #1

Default KDE plasma desktop folder, always missing icon

Got a wierd problem with the desktop folder - one of my icons in it is missing. If I create a new icon with the same details KDE prompts me to rename or overwrite. If I overwrite, the icon never appears.

Also, on occasion, the entire desktop folder will be empty. When I move the mouse over the positions where the icons should be, they suddenly appear.

Can someone tell me which config file my desktop folder settings are stored in, so I can go in and manually delete this ghost icon?

    Thanks.

Plasma is giving this output when restarted:

lets see what you have in repo's, do this in a terminal:

    Code:

I don't know what version of KDE you're running, but I used to run into the same issue every now and then with KDE4.1.x

Ever since I switched to 4.2.2 I haven't had any problems with the desktop plasmoid.

Okay, I've managed to solve that by switching the desktop to Folder view, deleting the suspect icons, then switching back to Desktop view.

I've got my folder back, with all the right icons, but they're in the wrong order. KDE won't let me rearrange them, it's like they're locked in position (except I checked all the settings, and none of the lock/align options are turned on).

lets see what you have in repo's, do this in a terminal:
I'm using KDE 4.1.3, if that's what you're looking for, but here are my repos.

I'm nervous about upgrading KDE, I had so many KDE/X/radeon/whatever problems when installing SuSE, I don't want to go through all that hell again.

    OK. I understand your concern.
I'm not sure of the wisdom in using the backports repo. I always find too may issues there.

FYI: I use 4.2.2 but stopped using the desktop folder in favour of this:

You can set the location to whatever suits. I use this autohide top panel in pref' to working thru kicker

Good point, I'll get rid of the backports. Not sure why that's in there actually, think I had a specific reason for it.

Is there a significant performance improvement in kde 4.2 compared to 4.1? I'm using a 2ghz with 1gig ram and a radeon 9700 (desktop), and the box just grinds to a halt after I start working with a few apps...

    Even firefox is noticeably sluggish...

    4.2 is a significant improvement over 4.1.3
    use these repos':
    Index of /repositories/KDE:/42/openSUSE_11.1

    Index of /repositories/KDE:/KDE4:/Community/openSUSE_11.1_KDE_42

Then update all unconditionally in both those repo's

the box just grinds to a halt after I start working with a few apps...
    Run
    Code:
    top
in a terminal to see what is taking cpu and memory
Delete beagle, if you haven't already.

What video driver are you using?? I have never used ATI but I do see a lot of ugly stories with ATI

Is it easy enough to roll back if it kills my machine?

Yeah, I know Beagle is long gone. XOrg is always at the top, 10% -> 30% cpu usually...

I couldn't use the fglrx driver from the ATI repo, it killed my box completely (search the Install forum for one of my posts, took me ages to fix). So I rolled back to the radeon driver shipped with the distro.

    Code:
    Section "Device"
      BoardName "R300 NE"
      Driver "radeon"
      Identifier "Device[0]"
      Option "monitor-VGA-0" "Monitor[0]"
      Screen 0
      VendorName "ATI"
      Option "GARTSize" "64"
    EndSection

That top looks ok, only it was missing the upper section.

Rolling back is easy enough just disable the kde42 repos. I would then add in the stable repo's for 4.1.3 and do an unconditional update in these.

Ahh! That's awesome... I just did the kde 4.2 upgrade and now this box is flying!

It's actually responsive again, comparative to XP on the same machine. What the hell did they screw up in 4.1 and get right in 4.2 to make that much of a difference!

I can even use the desktop effects now. Luxury, and it even fixed my plasmoid problem.

Easy upgrade too, amarok wasn't happy and I lost that digikam rubbish, but everything else was fine (after I fiddled with the repo order a bit)...

    Thanks man!
