Tarball Problems

I'm having problems installing from a tarball. I extract and run ./configure fine, but when I try to make/make install/checkinstall/whatever, it doesn't reconginise the commands - I get 'command not found'. I have gcc/g++ installed, and am slightly confused as to hence what I'm missing.

Anyone got any ideas?

make installed (there should then be /usr/bin/make)?

And why not show what happens? Something like

bash: makker: command not found

is much more illustrating then your story. Cut/paste was not invented for nothing.

As a bare minimum,for compiling, i always recommend having kernel sources,gcc/gcc++ & make installed. All can be found on the install dvd or online repositories

I always install the following to enable compiling of Tarballs.

Under Yast - Software - Install Software go to patterns and tick 'Base Development'.
Then do a search for 'Kernel' and find kernel source for the kernel version you are running.
Might be no harm to install kernel syms as well.

Install all of this and your tarball should compile fine.

Or with zypper:

zypper in -t pattern devel_basis devel_C_C++ devel_kernel

(the latter will only be needed if you compile kernel modules)
