    Default how to install gnome from kde in opensuse

    I am trying to install GNOME from KDE in openSUSE 10.1.

    I searched the forums, and all are mentioning this can be done by checking gnome-desktop in Yast2>software management>left side filter choice pattern>left side. But when I did this I just couldn't find that checkbox. In fact there are only two checkboxs in the Desktop section: Minimal Graphical Install and KDE, I cannot find the gnome-desktop there.

    Could you please advise how can I install GNOME then?

    Code:
    su -c "zypper in -t pattern gnome"
    //Edit:

    One moment... is this "openSUSE 10.1" no typo?

    If yes, install something still _supported_, SuSE Linux 10.1 (openSUSE 10.1 does not exist, the first distribution called openSUSE was 10.2 or 10.3) is _dead_ for more than a year now.

    (And if it is SuSE 10.1 it is no surprise you don't find this pattern, which was introduced later.)

    Hi,

    Thank you Akoellh. I really don't have any idea of the version of SUSE. I am pretty new to it. Here is some infomation I have:

    :/etc # cat SuSE-release
    SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop 10 (i586)
    VERSION = 10
    PATCHLEVEL = 1

    So this is not OpenSUSE, right? I tried the command 'su -c "zypper in -t pattern gnome" ', but it gives the following output:

    cnshexiahan:/mnt/cdrom/suse/i586 # su -c "zypper in -t pattern gnome"
    Restoring system sources...
    Parsing metadata for 20090408-093408...
    Parsing metadata for SUSE LINUX 10.1...
    Parsing RPM database...
    pattern 'gnome' not found
    Summary:
    Nothing to do.
    cnshexiahan:/mnt/cdrom/suse/i586 # su -c "zypper in -t pattern gnome-desktop"
    Restoring system sources...
    Parsing metadata for 20090408-093408...
    Parsing metadata for SUSE LINUX 10.1...
    Parsing RPM database...
    pattern 'gnome-desktop' not found
    Summary:
    Nothing to do.

    BTW, I don't know how to upgrade my SUSE to a newer version as in Ubuntu. I have lots of data on the disk which I don't what to lose during the upgrading.

    Hi,

    You are correct, this is NOT openSUSE. You'll need to go to the Novell forums for Suse Linux Enterprise Desktop here:

    SUSE Linux Enterprise Desktop (SLED) - NOVELL FORUMS
    Laptop: Dell Inspiron E1505 | OpenSUSE 12.1/Windows Vista | KDE | Intel CPU T2050 1.6 GHz | Intel 945GM | 3.2GB RAM
    Box: OpenSUSE 12.1/Windows 7 | KDE | Intel Core 2 Quad 8300 2.5GHz/core | nVidia Geforce 9500GT 1GB| 4 GB RAM
