I’ve recently started using GNOME (instead of KDE) and I was wondering whether there was a GNOME equivalent of kde4-kupdateapplet - ie. something which sits in the notification area and looks for updates.

I guess there isn’t. I’ve tried installing kde4-kupdateapplet which runs in the notification tray but (unsurprisingly) doesn’t really do much else.
