Default Update KDE 3.5 to 4.2

I want to upgrade my KDE from 3.5 to 4.2. Could anyone tell me, if it'a possible to do that without installing a new system? And how will it affect the programmes already installed?
    Thanks

Just in case you didn't know: you can have both KDE 3.5.10 & KDE 4 (latest version being KDE 4.2.2 (111") ), together on the same install of openSUSE 11.1 (assuming that is the version of openSUSE you use), and choose which Desktop to boot into when you login.

Have a read at this page: KDE/KDE4 - openSUSE (scroll down to heading "KDE 3 and KDE 4")

I didn't know. Thanks for the tip. I presume, after a while I can just uninstall the version I don't like.
    Thanks.

Probably not a good idea to uninstall.

I have just installed KDE 4 but Suse keeps starting 3.5.
How do I change the boot menu? I did have look at Yast's boot loader util, but I don't know if and what to chose.
    Thanks.

You have to disable auto login so you get a login screen, there you can select the desktop you want from the lower left of the screen.

Change login settings in Yast - Security and Users - User Management

    Thanks.
Seems my computer does not like 4.2, each time I start it I get a fatal error saying plasma has crashed.
    Ah well.

    Log in to kde3
Go to hidden files in /home /username
    and rename .kde4 to .kde4_old
Logout and then In to kde4
    See if that helps

To be honest KDE 4.2 in many ways is more of a downgrade then a upgrade to me.
It lacks many features compared to KDE 3.5 despite its flashy interface.
