    Default Compiling Building Making

    Hello,

Does anyone have some tips on how/where to start the learning process for compiling, building, making and installing software from source code.

I am new to Linux, but eager to learn...

I have tried several times with several different applications using:

    ./configure
    make
    su -c checkinstall

or alternatively following whatever instructions came with the source, but I have had very limited success in guiding the process to successful completion.

I understand that this is going to be a very steep and in depth learning curve.

There's so much great opensource software out there that doesn't necessarily come pre-packaged into RPM's.

I'm just looking for some starting points or helpful tips.

    Thanks,
    Aaron
