    Which is AWESOME, but I don't think it runs on Linux yet. Maybe wine can
    handle it, but I haven't tried.

    Thanks for the pointer to sketchup that would be about what I want. Thanks also for the pointer to the cad discussion but I already use QCad, am looking for something simple to just determine different layouts for the furniture in my living room.
    Something equivalent to using a piece of graph paper with cardboard blocks to scale for representing the furniture so that one can easily determine the resulting spacial relations before actually moving any furniture.

    The best version can be downloaded here:

    SourceForge.net: Sweet Home 3D: sweethome3d Project: Platform Download

    It's a java app and it comes with it's own copy of java so you can run it locally. It's very easy to setup and use .
