Red face Opensuse 11.1, kde NVIDIA problem

ello, here is my problem. I have installed nvidia driver (v180.29), did all confinguration (sax2 -r, played with nvidia settings) but still had problems. - system would freeze from time to time, screen was flashing every 10 seconds, system tray icons got messy and ugly.

So i have uninstalled nvidia packages and all went back as previous. But I know i still want to have them, is there any possibility? I found this post on one blog, shoudl I try what is in there: OpenSUSE 11.1 - OpenGL problem after nVIDIA driver update - iKurt.com.

I would really appreaciate help. Thank you in advance. I a bit new, I use 11.1, 64 bit kde 4.1.

    thank you

    Hi,

Video problems seem to be the big weakness of openSUSE 11.1 (aks those who
have computers with graphics card Intel 965 GM). Many things that were
wonderful in openSUSE 11.0, are just terrible in 11.1, as desktop effects.

I work in a computer with Nvidia card (GeForce 7300 SE) with openSUSE 11.1,
and I used to have many video problems when I had desktop effects enabled,
with both Kwin and Compiz. I just checked, and I have installed the same versions of
Nvidia drivers that you have. So, I would suggest you to disable desktop effects
if you have them enabled. This works fine to me, from watching videos to playing
    3D games.

    Ednilton.

    Ednilton, thanks for reply.

My laptop has NVidia GeForce Go 7200. I dont know how close this is to yours, but it is clear that is causes problems anyway.

In my case disabling desktop effects doesnt help. Screen is flashing to black for 1sec from time to time periodically. Moreover system freezes completely once in while - a problem which was not present before nvidia drivers intalled. So that why I have uninstalled them.

Well, thanks again. i still hope there is solution available, but if not - I'll wait for another system.

    Use an older driver.

Many people including a machine that my wife uses has issues with the 180.29 drivers.

It is not an openSUSE problem but is an nvidia problem.

The 177 series driver works perfectly on her machine with a 7300 graphics chip.

The nvidia Linux forum is a good place for information.

I will try older nvidia driver, 177.82 - the latest from 177 series, it could be downloaded from nvidia site for my 64 bit system.

Hopefully it will solve problem I had with 180.29.

The only thing I want to be sure of is whether I will be able to revert everything back to what it was if sth goes wrong.

Can it be done by typing this line into terminal:

    Code:
    sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-177.82-pkg2.run uninstall
There also seems to be some problems with 177 series as well in suse.

not sure if I will be able to solve them myself, because I am pretty new to linux...

here is an update of my problem (it still persists).

I was trying to install older version driver 177.70.33 which I have downloaded from Nvidia site. The 180.XX series does not seem to stable on my configuration (geforce 7200) as the pole indicates.

I installed kernel source, kernel headers, gcc, make... and pressed:

    init 3
    logged in as root and
    sh sh /home/renata/Desktop/NVIDIA-Linux-x86_64-177.70.33-pkg2.run -q
    as said in tutorial

But I did not suceed: there was and error saying Unable to build the NVIDIA kernel module

    Here is the log:
