    Default KDE 4.1 Update

    Hello Friends,

I just did a fresh install of OpenSuSE 11.1 with Desktop of KDE4.1 on a IBM Laptop T41, all went nice and smooth until it asked to install updates, its been on that stage of "updating with that bar that moves across" all night long yesterday its been over 15Hours and its still doing the same thing, should I stop it? any feed back would be greatly appreciated.

    Thanks,
    RAF

There is something not right here.
Stop it. It may take a while. Mins not hrs.
If it doesn't respond. Ctrl-Alt-Backspace may help.

    Don't reboot.

Try using a terminal and go su and enter your password, then try this:

    zypper ref

it should refresh the repos. If it fails report back. If it says your repos are upto date, then do:

    zypper up

report back and don't reboot yet. You may have a half baked kernel update in there, so I would recommend re-installing that.

If your web browser works, then yes, you have internet.

Try this from a su terminal

    rpmdb --rebuilddb

    wait........

Then try the zypper stuff again.

I sincerely recommend that you forget about zypper and yast software manager, and use SMART for updates and installs.
It is a class better than above mentioned.

For me, adding KDE Factory repositories does the job. Factory contains files that are somewhere between stable and development/totally unstable builds. I call it bleeding edge
Latest updates of kde4 factory are very very nice and didn't crashed on anything I use.

I'm not sure I would agree with the comments about using smart. Certainly I have used it with previous versions in the 10. range of suse. But now package management is much better along with zypper.

Once you have re-installed. Add these repos' and use Software Management to update the new repo's. You have to filter by repository to select the new repos and do update all unconditionally.
