Is alsaconf necessary everytime you boot (to get sound) ? If so, instead of running alsaconf, what happens if instead you type in a terminal or konsole as a regular user:
    su -c 'rcalsasound restart'
and enter root password when prompted.

If that works, then there is a file we can edit to have that run everytime at boot.

Yes every time I boot I have to use alsaconf and the answer is:

    su -c 'rcalsasound restart'

Shutting down sound driverERROR: Module snd_emu10k1 is in use
ERROR: Module snd_rawmidi is in use by snd_emu10k1

and ?? despite those errors, after booting, without running alsaconf, after you ran "rcalsasound restart" did your sound work ok ?
