    What is respository and what kind of repository should I have for my system?

    check the opensuse webpage for a descpription of what it is, and to know the most common ones. there are also some good posts by called oldcpu, in this forum. search.
    why do people open source?

    Software repository - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

    Your Install DVD is an example too.
    In Yast - Software - Repositories you will find those added to your repository list by default during install. They should include:
    OSS
    NON-OSS
    UPDATES
