Tried a current version of OpenOffice? Otherwise have your friend resend
it with just .doc format. They should probably set their default to .doc
as well since it seems most people I talk to are still on an older version
    of microsoft office still.

    Good luck.

Pardon my ignorance, but why do I need to decrypt a message that is intended for public viewing?

It's not encrypted, so you don't decrypt it. The message was in the
clear, which is why you were able to read it.

The message is, however, signed. Signing is done so you know it's from me
and not some 3vil h@x0r posing as me (unless, of course, they've stolen my
private key, in which case all bets are off).

    Good luck.

Open Office should do the trick; I go between Open Office and Microsoft Office all the time with no problems.

I think Barry and I assume this is known, but OpenOffice comes w/SUSE (and
most distros, for that matter) so you shouldn't need to do much more than
    load it.

    Good luck.

OpenOffice definitely does the job... I won't rant about MS here... I'm trying really hard.
    why do people open source?

OpenOffice 3 has a builtin Office OpenXML importer, however it isn't that great. Currently, odf-converter works better.

Perhaps, but you can get the Go-OO version of OO3.1 now.
