    Default OpenSuse 11.1 + Skype + Logitech

I am going to do an upgrade/new installation on my PC from 10.3 to 11.1 in a couple of weeks. I wanted to know if anyone who had done this then subsequently installed Skype, had any problems with Skype?

Living, as I do, in the Caribbean, Skype is very important to me for making phone calls, and I just wanted a heads-up before going ahead.

    Thanks.

If Skype is of such importance to you, I recommend not to update. I've been trying to install and keep up with Skype under SUSE 11.1 . It's well known that there is a problem with Skype and 11.1. Here's a threat that might help you get a better opinion from.

Skype with video on OpenSUSE 11.1 x86_64 - openSUSE Forums

Read, and think for yourself. I know the 11.1 expansion was big and important, but is it bigger than risking Skype. Decide for yourself.

    Good luck.

The installer from the skype site works fine, I have tried it on three computers with no issues at all.

The thread you pointed to seemed to be a 64 bit issue.

Skype Download for Linux - Download the latest features on Skype

The suse rpm on that page works just fine.

your success with Skype *might* vary according to the installation
choices you make in (for example):

    -selecting KDE3 vs KDE4
    -selecting Gnome vs KDE
-selecting Xfce vs Gnome/KDE (and etc)
    -selecting ALSA sound alone
    -selecting Pulse Audio sound alone
    -selecting both ALSA and Pulse
    -selecting 32 vs 64 bit

lots of variables there...if Skype were a driving for me i'd install
and test Skype after booting a 32 bit:
    -KDE3 Live CD
    -KDE4 Live CD
    -GNOME Live CD
-then do it all again with a 64 bit (if your hardware supports that)

AND, i would NOT install 11.1 without being SURE that i could go back
to 10.3 exactly configured as it now WORKS correctly (how/what you
    backup is up to you)

short version: due to variables, finding someone here with Skype
success (or not) on 11.1 is not a perfect predictor for your success
    (or not)..

    Hi

    Opensuse 11.1 with Skype 2.0.0.72

    env LD_PRELOAD=/usr/lib/libv4l/v4l1compat.so /opt/skype-2.0.0.72/skype

Needs this as its start line and then works ok.

The Skype dev forums show that they are working on a new version, one can only hope.
