try to enable "translucency" if you use kde3,
    or use cairo-dock with compiz.

Totally new to linux. I have the same problem with cairo-dock. I have intel x3100 graphics card and can't run cairo with opengl, but running it without I get the back background. I installed compiz but hasn't helped, what am I supposed to do to make the background on cairo translucent? Any help much appreciated.

    You need compositing enabled.

glxinfo | grep direct if it doesn't return direct rendering: Yes

You have to then configure your card to use 3d, try the check box in sax2.
Man first, have a try at Info, have a look at Wiki, if all that fails Scroogle!!!!!
If I've helped click on the Rep button I don't know what it does but it sounds cool.
