Default Hiding / spoofing the IP.

    Hi there.
To be anonymous when surfing the web is important. Do you have suggestions of programs to change my the MAC as well as IP-address?

    Thanks ahead.

Are you directly plugged into a network or do you have a hardware router of some kind? If you are using a router, that is the MAC address which your ISP and Internet are seeing. Some of them let you manually change the MAC address in the configuration. If you're using a Linux box as a router, you can just use ifconfig.

where is this most important to you, on your home network or while you are browsing through a foreign network (i.e. a wireless hotspot)?

not sure if this will "hide" or "spoof" your ip...but you may want to take a look at an SSH SOCKS proxy...

For the sake of this post, im assuming you have a laptop or other mobile device that connects to a hot spot, or otherwise untrusted network...

Basically, you set up this proxy on a machine that is on your home network, and configure your browser on the laptop/mobile device to use the proxy server on your home network.

Once that is done, all your internet traffic will be routed via ssh (encrypted an all) from the laptop to your home server. In essence, the laptop is encrypted request to your home machine to fetch data from the internet and forward the data to you over an encrypted ssh tunnel...

    it looks something like this:

You enter en.opensuse.org (or whatever site you are trying to reach) into your laptop's browser.

your laptop's browser sends an encrypted request to your proxy server (on your home network)that says "fetch this webpage"

the proxy server fetches the webpage in the normal fasion on behalf of your laptop.

The server then encrpts the data it just fetched and sends it back to your laptop...

So basically, the remote webpage ( en.opensuse.org in this example ) only sees the proxy server, not your laptop. And anyone who tries to snoop or otherwise listen in on your browsing while you are connected to the foreign network will run into an encrypted ssh tunnel!

Ive never done this myself but have heard several good things about it.

I am by no means an expert on this subject, or networking in general, however I believe this would add some latency to your connection (since all your browsing is going through the a middleman -- your proxy server)

below is a url to a basic tutorial. hope this helps

pimanac, thanks a lot for your detailed answer. Reps raised.
I know a lot about using SSH proxies already, but my most "important" thought was to aditionally chnage the MAC and IP on a regular basis when surfing through WLAN.

So it's basically not a router thingy, but rather I wanted to get some suggestions on prgrams that automatically could do the job of changing for me.
As for the SSH proxy I strongly recommend putty. It's an excelent way to ensure your privacy.

Is there some reason you want to change your MAC address? Nothing
beyond your first hop is going to see your own MAC address in any case
unless you send it as part of the data of your packet in a higher layer
(not normal at all) for some reason. IP addresses will of course
persist but they're not exactly something meant to be anonymous or data
could not get back to you. If you really want to be anonymous online
you should look into something like The Onion Router (TOR) network stuff.

    Good luck.

Just for clarification: TOR doesn't mean you surf the net completely anonymous...

interesting statement about tor, provided that you have taken steps to perform DNS lookups thru the tor network, prevented java/javascript from querying your machine for for it's ip address, and prevented cookie tracking.... why would it be less anonymous than any method mentioned in this discussion?

slower maybe, but not less anonymous, more anonymous due to sheer volume of requests from a tor exit node compared to the connection to the home/host proxy.
