    Default no Boot

    Hello There :-)

I have just installed openSuse 11.1 on my HP nc6000. It had windows XP on it. (i am a newcomer) After successful install I looked the system over and then turned it off, it would not reboot. I thought it over for a while and then re-installed deleting my Windows. After successful install when I turned it off it would not reboot. I looked over the install DVD and ran it where it says repair "Boot", that found a problem and repaired it but still will not boot. When a boot is attempted a HP screen comes up and says "system missing". I have tried starting and pressing all of the F keys, at F10 there is a DOS screen that comes up and doesn't seem to function. Any ideas ?

If you have the LiveCD, boot it, open a terminal, and do:

    Code:
    su -
    fdisk -lu
And post back the output here using copy/paste from the terminal to the browser.

If you used the DVD, boot it into Rescue System, login as root, and do the above. Post back the output here.

How can you get to the login if the machine will not boot? Or was this before you tried to fix it? Please explain.

Hello There, sorry to confuse :-)
I was following your earlier instructions where you said that if I used the DVD, boot it into Rescue System and log on, it would not allow me to log on. I also have the liveCD, booted in with that and followed your instructions with the terminal code. I have been careful not to fiddle with the computer so that the error code will still be the same :-)

OK, thanks for explaining that. We can fix the problems from the LiveCD or DVD, but actually it will probably be easier and faster for you to just re-install. During the install, make sure the partition step re-uses the current partitions or even better, deletes the current partitions and creates new ones. At the boot loader step, make sure the summary says that it is installing either grub or generic boot code to the MBR. Then at the Online Updates step, be sure to take that option and do the updates. Then, very first thing to do once the system has started for the first time, is go to YaST/Software/Online Updates and make sure all the updates have been done (in particular, look for updates named "parted" and "perl-bootloader" - your problem is because you needed these two patches). That should take care of everything.
