Thread: no sound after update to 11.1

  1. #1

Default no sound after update to 11.1

after I updated to 11.1 (from 11.0) yast
recognized my sound card (Intel ICH10
Als Soundkarte Nummer 0 konfiguriert) and associated a driver with it (snd-hda-intel). I set volume on headphones and master to 100% but cannot play the test sound. Obviously, vlc or kaffeine don't play any sound either.

I have reported a similar bug. In some cases, after you have logged in, you can open a console and enter
    su --
    rcalsasound restart
    and you will get sound.
But it does not work with all sound chips. In that case, try SDB:AudioTroubleshooting - openSUSE

I have found that the YaST sound test does not work in 11.1 although the sliders are. In kcontrol under multimedia check that the device setup is correct and that you have a backend. IIRC a few months ago I needed to use the xine backend rather than gstreamer (although both work now); the xine backend is in the Packman repo.

Please note that to determine if you have sound, please copy and paste the following speaker-test into a Gnome terminal or a kde konsole:
    speaker-test -c2 -l5 -twav
You should hear a female voice saying 'FRONT LEFT', 'FRONT RIGHT' five times. If you hear that voice, then you likely have an application or a codec problem. Post if that is the case, and the advice then will be different.

If you have no success with the audio troubleshooting guide, then we will need more information if we are to make a good recommendation ... So can you provide more very detailed information so a good recommendation can be given? You can do that, with your PC connected to the internet, by opening a gnome-terminal or a kde konsole and typing:
    /usr/sbin/alsa-info.sh

that will run a diagnostic script and post the output to a web site on the Internet. It will give you the URL of the web site. Please post that URL here. Just the URL. It may be that you need to run that script twice with root permissions.

Also, please copy and paste the following commands one line at a time into a gnome-terminal or a konsole and post here the output:
    rpm -qa | grep alsa
    rpm -qa | grep pulse
    rpm -q libasound2
    uname -a
    cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound
    We also need that output.

thanks for your help and interest. I ran the alsa info script getting repeated advice that a newer script was available. I ran the (presumably newer) script, only to get the same message, again. I hope that the script sent information to you.

Here are the results of the shell commands you recommended:

    rpm -qa | grep alsa:

    alsa-1.0.18-8.7
    alsa-plugins-1.0.18-6.12
    alsa-oss-1.0.17-1.37
    alsa-utils-1.0.18-6.4
    alsa-plugins-pulse-1.0.18-6.12
    ----------------------------------

    rpm -q libasound2:

    libasound2-1.0.18-8.7
    ----------------------------------

    rpm -qa | grep pulse:

    libpulse0-0.9.12-9.6
    pulseaudio-esound-compat-0.9.12-9.6
    libpulsecore4-0.9.12-9.6
    alsa-plugins-pulse-1.0.18-6.12
    vlc-aout-pulse-0.9.8a-9.1
    libxine1-pulse-1.1.15-20.8
    pulseaudio-0.9.12-9.6
    -----------------------------------

    uname -a:

    Linux obelix 2.6.27.7-9-pae #1 SMP 2008-12-04 18:10:04 +0100 i686 i686 i386 GNU/Linux
    -----------------------------------

    cat /etc/modprobe.d/sound:
    options snd slots=snd-hda-intel
    # u1Nb.HWaQlUCDee5:ICH10 HD Audio Controller
    alias snd-card-0 snd-hda-intel
    ------------------------------------

I hope this helps. BTW: sound is working when booting vista business, so I guess it's not a hardware error.

    Thanks, Bernd

PS: restarting the alsasound server did not change the situation.

Thanks, ... if you read my post, you will note the caution "It may be that you need to run that script twice with root permissions". I guess I should have been more specific. You will find you CAN run the script as a regular user, and simply select "NO" to the update. BUT if you wish to run it with the update, then run it as user root (ie type "su" first, enter root password, then run the script). By doing this the script WILL initially update it self. When you run the script again, it WILL post your PC's sound software/hardware configuration to a page on the Internet, and give you a URL for that page.

Please try that, and post here the URL.

Thankyou for the other inputs. They are essential in determining what extent the corrective action should take, but we also need the script URL to determine the direction of the corrective action.

ok, it was the permissions. The script ran. The url is:

    http://www.alsa-project.org/db/?f=40...676692209bce4b

I hope that you can help, thanks again, Bernd

That was very useful. What PC are you using? I note your PC has an IDT 92HD73E1X5 codec. Thats very new.

I've succeeded in helping one user with this codec, and failed with another. I believe you need a cutting edge alsa version to have any success with this. Hence, to update from 1.0.17/1.0.18 of alsa, to 1.0.19 (the latest) please with your PC connected to the internet, open a gnome terminal or kde konsole and type 'su' (no quotes - enter root password when prompted) to get root permissions, and then copy and paste the following 6 commands, in sequence one at a time, and execute them one at a time to update your alsa version to 1.0.19:
    Code:
     zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/multimedia:/audio/openSUSE_11.1/ multimedia
    Code:
     zypper install alsa alsa-oss alsa-plugins alsa-plugins-pulse alsa-utils alsa-tools alsa-firmware libasound2
    Code:
     zypper rr multimedia
    Code:
     zypper ar http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/multimedia:/audio:/KMP/openSUSE_11.1/ multimedia
    Code:
     zypper install alsa-driver-kmp-pae
    Code:
     zypper rr multimedia
and then restart your PC and test your sound. (Reference: Alsa-update - openSUSE ).

If that does not work, leave the alsa update in place, and advise, and I can recommend some edits to your /etc/modprobe.d/sound file.

thanks a lot, it worked. In case you are interested about the installation, I include a protocol file. Concerning the board: I'm using an Intel DG45ID, G45 chip set plus 7.1 sound onboard.

As I said previously, the sound also worked with 11.0.

The test sound still does not work. I guess this is a known error also referred to in the latest comparison of SuSE 11.1 with Fedora and Ubuntu in an article of ct.

I also played around with the channel settings (loudness only), setting master, pcm, head phones, and front to 100% and all the rest to zero. As I had used the same settings before the installation of the packages you recommended, wrong settings were not the cause of the loss of sound.

    Thanks again, Bernd

    Glad to read that.

    But I note this:

    Code:
    obelix:/home/baer # zypper install alsa alsa-oss alsa-plugins alsa-plugins-pulse alsa-utils alsa-tools alsa-firmware libasound
    and this:

    Code:

That package is libasound2 and not libasound.

Glad to read it still works with the old libasound2, but you may wish to also update libasound2.
