Application to include into openSUSE: how to suggest?

Sorry, if this is a wrong place to ask, but I cannot figure out, where.

If I want to see a particular (open-source) application in openSUSE, where, to whom should I suggest it?

Hi
You could look at building it yourself via the build service, since you
don’t say what the application is, have you searched here for it?
Get It

OK, I should have been more specific

It is OmegaT computer-aided translation tool (OmegaT). If this application were included into openSUSE, this would be to the benefit of the both communities, IMHO, because:

  • openSUSE could be recommended to translators who want to try Linux;
  • OmegaT users could have easier install and update procedures.

Currently, OmegaT is included into such distros as Linguas OS and PCLOS-Trans, but neither of them is as fine as openSUSE  .

I personally can easily install and update OmegaT, but for a less experienced user an “out-of-the-box” solution could be a better solution.

Packman in their faq has a link to a page where you can suggest apps

Suse 11.1 x64, Kde 4.2beta, Opera 10.x weekly

Hi
It’s already built by someone, just called omega-t
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/thomas-schraitle/openSUSE_11.0/
It should work ok with 11.1, if it doesn’t grab the source and build
from that.

The openSUSE wiki pages also include a package wishlist section, broken down into different software categories. You can add it to that list if you hope to see it included by default in future.

Thanks a lot for your answers!

Ah, that hyphen is not correct for the name, that’s why I could not find it, I guess  It’s great, this package exists, it’s a pity that the version there (1.7.3) is outdated :frowning:

Cool! I’ve already filed a request. Hopefully, they will pay attention to it

Well, I wish success to the (open)SUSE team and to all users! Good luck!

If the application is somewhat requested by lot’s of users and it’s needed to improve the distro you can submit a request to add to the OSS repository.
See [opensuse-factory] What to do when additional packages are needed in the](http://lists.opensuse.org/opensuse-factory/2009-01/msg00162.html)
openSUSE is an open project so you should be able to have your package there.

Also you can see Contrib repo which in the future will work as expected.

Then another question: is there a place to vote for an application?

Hi
Search again, there may be a later version available

Indeed, there’s 1.8.1_01 available for openSUSE 11.1. And still a redundant hyphen in the name! No wonder that I could not find it, because I used the right name in search queries lol! Thanks for the tip!

However, I work with OmegaT 2.0.0.1 (beta, but much improved as compared with the 1.8.x line).

Yet one more question. Here’s a link to download that RPM:
http://download.opensuse.org/repositories/home:/malcolmlewis/openSUSE_11.1/noarch/omega-t-1.8.1_01-8.1.noarch.rpm

I conclude, it is still not in the mainstream repos, but in some private repo of a person, presumably Malcolm Lewis. Am I right?

Hi
Correct, it was built yesterday by myself

…and that person is you, right? Yes, you, don’t deny! lol! I think, I did not see your name among the developers of OmegaT. Or I’ve got a bad memory?

And thanks a lot for building! This alchemy is beyond my modest skills

But you aren’t in the OmegaT team, are you? Sorry, your name does not sound familiar to me.

Hi
No, just a packager. Although I have ported/created/modified patches to
a few kernel modules to get them to work. If you want I can put the beta
up there as well.

Packaging the latest beta (or even the very latest version from CVS) would be awfully great! Thanks in advance!

Hi
