Default Re: how to install software and resolve dependencies

zypper is the equiv of YUM.

    Zypper/Usage/11.1 - openSUSE

    eg: in a su terminal

    zypper lr
    (lists updates)

    zypper ref
    (refreshes the repo's)

Dependencies are an issue. Usually this is more of a problem when you go beyond the normal setup of repos. For example, many are using the build service repo's of kde4.2

By default an install should give you these repos:
    OSS
    NON-OSS
    Updates

after those the main one you will need is Packman

VLC repo is added only to get libdvdcss - then it is disabled
