OpenSUSE 11.1 freezes at login

Hello!

I am new to Linux, yesterday I have installed it for the first time and I’m quite impressed, I must say ].

Still, this morning I came across major problem:

When I input my password at the SUSE logon screen, it freezes.
It doesn’t matter whether I put correct or incorrect password, it still kinda freezes kinda means, that when I press power button it goes to standby mode ]

I believe the problem is not in graphical environment, because when I login through console, not the logon screen, and give ‘startx’ command, KDE comes up fine.

What can be the problem?

My hardware is IBM T42, with Centrino 1,7 and 1,5GB RAM on board, with ATI Radeon 7500.

Thanks for any help,

Swistak

So the problem is the graphical login screen which is part of KDE4, or are you using KDE3?

First thing I’d do is check the installation media, i.e., the DVD or CD md5sum, just to leave no doubt.

Second, I’d try to update the system, if you didn’t already. This will probably solve the problem.

Third, search for ‘kde4 freeze login’ here and at the kde4 forums (or just google it).

If nothing works I’d try to upgrade KDE4, or install KDE3 which ATM I prefer, anyway.
