Default firmware upload to HP 1018 fails on SuSE 11.1

HP LaserJet 1018 needs firmware upload after start-up. Upload by
    cat ~/sihp1018.dl > /dev/usb/lp0
works in SuSE 11.0 with KDE 3.5 but fails in SuSE 11.1 because /dev/usb does not exist.
I must first load the firmware in SuSE 11.0, then restart to SuSE 11.1 on another partition, then I can print.
Also /dev/usb/lp0 exists then and I could upload firmware again.

Hi, I have HP laserjet 1020 and I had installation problems with it on suse 11.1, it did help me to install hplip from yast and then run hp-setup as root from konsole. If you haven't tried yet, it may help.

I found a solution. Right-click the little blue HPLIP Status Service icon in the panel, select HP Device Manager, Actions, Install Required Plugin. Now my HP 1018 works fine.
