11.1 32-bit, KDE 3.5, Intel DG965WH mobo with ICH8 audio
Upon install, system sound worked and still works
First attempts to use Amarok revealed that Mattias Ettrich’s welcome to
Amarok played only with the Xine engine rather than the default GStreamer.
Per prior advice from oldcpu, added Packman repository and installed
smplayer, mplayerplug-in, libxine1, xine-ui, amarok, amarok-xine, vlc,
libffmpeg0, w32codec-all. Found that mp3 radio streams would give a “no
demux plugin” error but ogg streams played fine. While it has nothing
to do with Amarok, I find that I get video on YouTube but no sound,
which I presume is mp3.
Read that the following parses should be made and that wherever the
modules were not from .pm (Packman), they should be updated to the
Packman source. Did that. Following a reboot, Amarok was missing from
the panel, and when clicked on in the menu, flashed briefly on the
screen without loading. Subsequent attempts to load from the menu do
nothing.
Looked through various log files hoping to find error messages relating
to Amarok but found none.
I suspect a bad version of an app “snuck” into you updates. Are you using repositories to install via zypper/yast? or are you using the 1 click install. I do not recommend the 1 click for multiimedia updates, as it could drag in apps from Novell-SuSE-GmbH or from videolan.
This may be a silly question but why do you want to have amarok to use gstreamer when xine works? I have it set up this way and it has never failed me.
I personally would uninstall all the packages you installed previously (smplayer, mplayerplug-in, libxine1, xine-ui, amarok, amarok-xine, vlc,
libffmpeg0, w32codec-all) and just install amarok and amarok-xine from packman. This will hopefully work.
Maybe after this put back w32codec-all, mplayer and vlc. But this is optional. Like OldCPU said, make sure all these come from packman and nowhere else.

Thanks. I didn’t use one-click for any multimedia stuff, I find that
SMplayer works okay for playing streams, but I’ll check out the URL in
the hope that it will help me to resolve the YouTube sound issue. Thanks

For now I am using smplayer for the streams.

I think I just stick with smplayer for now and work on getting sound for
YouTube. So many blog news articles have links to YouTube.

Completed this and found/resolved quite a few missing dependencies.
When I checked back through, I found I needed to repeat step 1. Amarok
now loading and playing mp3 as well as ogg. Many thanks.
During this testing and updating, I twice had YouTube sound working. In
each case it did not survive rebooting.
