    Default KDE 4.1 issues

    On my other computer I have 11.1 installed w/KDE 4.1. There's some
oddities that I can't figure out and would appreciate some pointers on.

Next to the clock in the lower right is a panel. Inside it are three
utilities: Kmix, the update checker thingie, and klipper. If I lock
widgets volume and klipper show as solid black rectangles instead of
icons. The updater shows as just a zero. If I unlock widgets, volume
shows as just an empty area and the other two are black rectangles.
They change position when I toggle the lock too. Also, the clock will
overlap the panel when I lock it.

    Any help appreciated...

This sort of thing is not that uncommon in kde4.

Sometimes, users find starting a new .kde4 folder will resolve it
    It's a hidden folder
You need to rename the existing one to: .kde4old

    Ctrl-Alt-F1
    At the prompt do:

    mv /home/username/.kde4 .kde4old

(username needs to be your user name)

    reboot

Login will be a NEW kde4, like first time.

Yeah, I did that, but the icons are still black rectangles. I created a
2nd user and it's the same in that profile. The taskbar just seems very
unstable as a whole. Making slight changes like just moving an icon can
bork the whole thing up. I know some folks seem to really like it, but
every time I play w/it, it's a definite 'not ready for prime time'
    experience.

Maybe this is just SUSE's way of getting us all on gnome. Sigh...

See this bug: Bug 158094 – system-tray icon backgrounds are not transparent

A lot of issues revolve around this bug. Look at the number of duplicate/similar bugs striked out in the comments.

PS: If suse was trying to push everyone to Gnome then why am I having none of the problems you have?!

Hmmm. Thanks for the link. Looks like I'm just going to have to either
wait for a patch to be backported, or wait for SUSE 11.2/KDE 4.2. But
they don't have plans for a 4.1 backport so I get to wait 6 months for
11.2. Sigh. I really like the new look of KDE 4. Not quite used to
the changes in managing the beast, but that just takes time. Bummer
that a new release is hobbled right out of the starting chute. Oh well.

Good question. I've always wondered why some folks have so much trouble
w/programs that never give me any grief. And yet, a fresh install acts
really goofy on this system. Go figure. Maybe it's just older hardware
that just isn't up to snuff any more. It's an Intel on-board video on a
six or seven year old Shuttle IIRC. Maybe I'm just pushing it too hard...

I had that with the Aya theme try a different theme. Elegance & Heron seem to work best.
